• The New York Mets have done a lost of things during the 2004 off-season to help build their team into a contender for the 2005 season.  After helping lead to the Boston Red Sox to their first World Series victory since 1918, the Mets acquired pitcher Pedro Martinez, who has dominated nearly every game he has pitched.  The Mets have also looked heavily into acquiring Carlos Beltran from the Houston Astros.  Beltran ranked high in many offensive statistical categories at the end of the 2004 season, and the Mets could use every bit of his offensive productivity. 

• The Washington Nationals will play their first season ever during the 2005 season.  The franchise, formerly known as the Expos, was originally located in Montreal, Canada, and was the first Major League Baseball franchise to not be within the United States.  The moving of the franchise from Montreal to Washington DC signifies the end of an era in baseball, and the beginning of a new one.

• History was made during the 2004 season as Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki set a Major League record with 262 hits for the season.  The previous record of 257 was set by George Sisler in 1920.

• The 2004 season did not produce the results that the New York Yankees wanted.  After acquiring Alex Rodriquez, the Yankees hoped to win their record 27th World Championship, but the Boston Red Sox stood in there way at the American League Championship Series.  The Yankees would take the first three games of the Series, putting the Red Sox in a tough situation.  But Boston managed to string together 4 straight victories to advance to the World Series.  After the season, the Yankees set their eyes on pitcher Randy Johnson in an effort to find the missing ingredient to another World Series Championship.

• Making the playoffs is becoming a routine for the San Francisco Giants these days.  With home run king Barry Bonds leading the way, the Giants are looking to visit the playoffs yet again.

• In 1998, the Padres made it to the World Series but lost to the New York Yankees.  Since then the Padres have not had much to celebrate.  Opening a new ballpark and having one of the best young teams in baseball is giving Padres fans reasons to celebrate once again.  With their new ballpark, the Padres are hoping to visit the World Series again, but this time come away with a different outcome.

• The ballots have been casted, and no recount was needed, Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg have inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Located in Cooperstown, NY, the induction of both of these players is sure to be a memorable occasion.  Boggs played for three teams during his career, but spent the most time with the Boston Red Sox.  His lifetime batting average of .328 and 3,010 hits earned him 12 appearances in the All-Star Game, and a special place in the hearts of many fans of baseball.  Sandberg played for two teams during his career, but fans remember his days with the Chicago Cubs the most.  Although his batting average was not as high as Boggs, his numerous Gold Gloves, and Silver Slugger awards more than make up.
