The team was named
the Marlins because the fish is a fierce fighter and an adversary that

to former Expos owner Peter Loria. After the sale, Marlins fans lost interest in the team, and the team performed poorly. In 2003, the Marlins started slowly, but came back to claim their second playoff berth. Entering the playoffs few gave the Marlins any chance, however they defeated the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS and the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS to advance to their second World Series. In the World Series, the Marlins met the New York Yankees, and again were not given much of a shot, but the Marlins defeated the Yankees for their second World Championship. The Marlins entered the 2004 season with high hopes after winning the 2003 World Series, but despite finishing above .500 they fell short of reaching the postseason.
